Documentation draft — not a verified product specification. Exact fields and source refresh behaviour require verification.

Overview

NPI Lookup assists users in researching public National Provider Identifier information. It can help identify publicly listed provider or organisation records for administrative reference.

Who should use it

Billing staff, enrollment staff, coders and RCM analysts.

Prerequisites

A provider name or NPI to look up. Do not enter private patient information into search fields.

What an NPI is

An NPI is a 10-digit identifier assigned to eligible healthcare providers and organisations in the United States. An NPI record is an administrative identifier, not proof that a provider is licensed, credentialed, enrolled with a particular payer or in network.

An NPI listing does not independently verify credentials or network participation.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Open NPI Lookup.
  2. Search using the fields actually available (for example, NPI or public provider/organisation name).
  3. Inspect matching public records.
  4. Confirm organisation/person classification, location, taxonomy and other fields only if returned.
  5. Cross-check the authoritative NPPES data and any relevant payer enrollment records.

Example workflow

Look up a provider you work with, review the NPI details shown, and compare them with your organisation's provider record.

Understanding results

Public NPI records can contain outdated or self-reported details. NPI possession does not establish licensure or network status.

Limitations

  • Public NPI records can contain outdated or self-reported details.
  • NPI possession does not establish licensure or network status.
  • Avoid using NPI Lookup as a credential-verification service.
  • Do not enter private patient information into search fields.
  • NPI information is an administrative reference, not proof of licensure or payer network participation.

Troubleshooting

  • No match: check the spelling and the NPI digits, then try a broader search.
  • Details differ from your record: use your organisation's verified record and the provider's own confirmation where they conflict.
  • Verify search parameters, results columns, data provider, update cadence, pagination and any copy/export functionality before documenting them as available.
