Code Lookup

Search ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and HCPCS Level II codes with AI guidance, using verified non-PHI examples.

Documentation draft — not a verified product specification. This page is based on the Assurlytics complete product documentation (version 1.0-draft, 2026-10-31). Specific detail panels and actions require live verification.

Overview

Code Lookup helps coders, billers, students and auditors research standardised medical codes in a single workspace. Instead of switching between unrelated reference pages, users can select a code system, search a known code or descriptive phrase, inspect matching entries and review supporting explanations where available.

A code may have multiple similar descriptions, restrictions, effective dates or documentation implications. Research must account for the correct classification and code year.

Who should use it

Medical coders, coding students, coding auditors and billing staff.

Prerequisites

An Assurlytics account with access to Code Lookup. Use synthetic or non-identifying information only — never patient-identifiable information. See Data and Privacy.

Inputs

  • Selected code system: ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS or HCPCS Level II.
  • Code or descriptive search text.
  • Optional context, only if the current UI supports it.

Outputs

Candidate matches, code descriptions, classification-specific details and available explanatory guidance.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Open Code Lookup in the application.
  2. Choose the code system tab: ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS or HCPCS Level II.
  3. Search by code, description or question. See Search by Code or Description.
  4. Select a result to view its details, including official description, coding guidance and related codes where available. See Code Details.
  5. Review any available notes, related codes or AI explanation.
  6. Validate the correct code-year guidelines and documentation before use.

Example (synthetic / non-PHI only)

Search ICD-10-CM for E11.9. The verified example result is E11.9 — Type 2 diabetes mellitus without complications. This example demonstrates code lookup, not diagnosis selection for an actual patient.

ICD-10-PCS 0FT44ZZ is also listed in the approved mockup as an example code; its details are shown in the application and no description is invented for it here.

Understanding results

Open a candidate to inspect its available details, and keep the selected code set visible so you do not mistake a diagnosis for a procedure or supply code. A result is a research starting point, not a final coding determination.

AI explanations and coding guidance

Where enabled, AI can explain terminology, suggest research considerations or describe why a code may warrant further review. AI content is advisory. It must not be described as an authoritative code-set replacement, a guaranteed correct code assignment or a medical diagnosis. A useful prompt pattern is: "Explain what this code describes and what a coder should verify in the applicable official guidelines." Do not enter patient-specific narratives.

Limitations

  • Code Lookup is decision support. It does not replace payer policy, coding guidelines or professional judgement.
  • Do not claim any detail panel exists until it is verified in the application. A detailed code page may explain, if supported: full code/title, billable/specific status, inclusion/exclusion notes, code hierarchy, related codes, documentation considerations and source/version.
  • Verify in the UI whether autocomplete, filters, sorting, pagination, copying, save/history and Enter-versus-button search behaviour are supported. This page does not assert them.
